Why is this device using a proprietary emmc module? I received my unit but it didn't come with emmc and can't use SD. Not a big deal I thought as I have lots of emmc modules. But none fit. I even removed the screw and put the module into the socket and held it with my finger while trying to boot. It's not detected. I don't understand the use of non standard hardware.

As far I know, the physical interface is not define, so each manufacturer uses their own, although I don't know for sure. The board supports usb boot, so you can just use that

I think you are correct, there was just one that lots of makers used so the emmc worked on a number of devices, but it wasn't really standard.
