Testing memory on possibly defective board?

Would there be a minimal image that would allow to test the memory, or a way from u-boot to restrict the system to use only 1GB instead of 2? So far I tried every linux image on the S905X page on 4 different MicroSD cards (different manufacturers and speed ratings) and in every case the board hard-locks about 10-15 seconds after power is applied, at a point of the boot process varying based on the image used. The only way I found to go from there is to power-cycle the board, and then it won't go past the u-boot/uefi loader and the microSD card is corrupted / locked in 'read only' mode until I wipe and reimage it.
This also happened with the emmc when it had the original factory image, and it wouldn't go past the first 10-15 seconds of the boot process. The board would find the u-boot image, start loading the kernel, then freeze.

  • Found the culprit that was causing the hard-locks. Turns out it was the USB power cable I was using, there was apparently enough of a voltage drop along its length that it would cause the board to brown out and lock. Using a beefier cable fixed the issue. Looks like the board doesn't have an undervoltage alert monitor like the Pi does?
