Hardware Acceleration / Decoding via Linux in the Future?
Seeing the recent news about the S905X chipset's meson driver development is nearing completion of hardware decoding, I'm hopeful and wondering what is the likelihood that we'll see a kernel upgrade with updated meson drivers so that we can do HW decode via linux. Just wanted to hear from someone / anyone if they may know of any plans.

BayLibre is working on it on Libre Computer's behalf but it will still take a few months. As soon as it is done, we will throw out images with accelerated video decode.
Currently the best estimates put it at 3-4 months to appear in upstream for MPEG2 and H.264. Maybe another 2-3 months for H.265 and VP9.
That being said, we will have relatively stable release for this work within 2 months.
This is great news! i dont mind the wait as long as theres a plan thanks for the info
This is in the latest LibreELEC if you are into using mainline Linux. Use CoreELEC for best user experience since that is using the vendor kernel.
