Ubuntu xfce - failed to boot.
Debian lxde - booted successfully, thanks.
         Getting Started presentation was blank.
         YouTube played VP9 video in 1/2 screen well, but no hdmi audio (should the SBC support hdmi audio?).

I was able to book the July 6 Ubuntu xfce image. I listed my steps in the thread labeled "la frite how to flash emmc"

Since I'm writing this on the la Frite, obviously got an image which is the Ubuntu one found in latest La Frite specifications link... http://wiki.loverpi.com/sbc:libre-computer-aml-s805x-ac.  and downloaded  ' libre-computer-aml-s805x-ac-ubuntu-bionic-mate-mali-4.19.57+-2019-07-05 (1)'. 
Had to change country keyboard settings since it seems to have been set to USA (isn't this a French board?). Got rid of firefox which really slowed it down and install Chromium instead.
The links given on the desktop don't work just go to blank weblink. Expect the Wiki which works ok.
Compared to the pi 3 (never mind the pi 4) it has not got its speed or ability to multitask without jamming up, despite its "alleged higher spec" . Also doesn't appear to have a sound card and definitely no wifi adaptor. Not too certain that this will go mainstream but will persevere with it to see what it can do.. Haven't tried GPIOs yet. But have loaded Arduino Ide 1.8 which seems to work as long as I don't go online.

you can change keyboard config like on any debian. the command is "dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration".
