GPIO on Android?

Has anyone been able to access the gpio using android on the le potato?
I'm an android noobie, but I'm looking for a starting point to figure out how to add physical buttons to android via the gpio. Any information, pointers, or suggestions would be a huge help!

They are usually controlled in /sys/gpio for Android but it varies so much because Android uses vendor BSP instead of upstream.
