Upstream u-boot Status

Renegade Elite (ROC-RK3399-PC) is supported by upstream u-boot and we are working to get the first SPI boot implementation working with 2020.01 release being the formal target.

Should Work by u-boot 2020.01

HDMI output
EFI boot
Ubuntu 20.04 EBBR support

Will Not Work by u-boot 2020.01

Type-C DisplayPort output (this entire subsystem is not finalized in the u-boot project yet)
NVMe boot (this entire subsystem is not finalized in the u-boot project yet)
EFI persistent variables (this was not merged due to subsystem design being under review)

I'd love to say this is in any way helpful, but compiled images from this release flashed to SPI NOR still do not boot. Are there any special manipulations done to the image in order to boot? The package supplied in the downloads section has an idb_spl.img size which is much larger than what is compiled: 958k on your build vs 236k on a mainline compiled build. The only advantage of the link you supplied is that I have an image file which is supposed to boot off SPI in order to flash images on a storage media directly with the board, but my goal is to get a working u-boot SPI which boots off nvme (Armbian forums have supplied diff files to achieve this). Any further hindsight on how to make a functional idbloader.img and u-boot.itb? Thanks.

Also, do I need a specific build environment? I am currently using Debian/Ubuntu on WSL2 in Windows with aarch64-linux-gnu cross compiler.

Regarding the NVMe boot, it was recently upstreamed because the consultants needed to upstream the PCI-E driver for RK3399. The latest release of u-boot should support NVMe boots.

I'm considering buying a Renegade Elite, and the possibility of seeing a boot menu on a HDMI screen would be a major deciding factor.

Are the Renegade Elites shipping with images that include a HDMI-supporting u-boot?

Are images that include an HDMI-supporting u-boot available for download?

Or would I have to compile u-boot myself to get this functionality?
