Compiling new u-boot based on mainline

I've been attempting to compile a new u-boot from mainline, but I've been coming up against hurdles. Whenever I attempt a compile, I hit a step where it says my SPL version is too large. Has anyone successfully compiled a u-boot and has a step by step? I obviously want to flash this to the SPI in order to boot the board from it. There's a patch that was supplied on the armbian forums to boot nvme from u-boot. If I get this part in u-boot, I am officially operational with this board (Sans WIFI, obviously)

@loverpi I would need some help to compile mainline so it will work on SPI. I'm able to compile u-boot mainline, I'm able to create u-boot.itb just fine, but idbload_spi.img seems to be a much bigger size in the package you compiled versus what I end up with. I imagine there are special steps to make the image bootable off SPI? For example, modifying the generated .config, combining certain images to get the idbload_spi.img file... Please provide some guidance.

Someone on the armbian forum managed to compile u-boot from mainline, flash it to SPI and boot from NVMe with a patch... Progress, I guess.

Tried to compile based on his instructions and could not boot my board... Guidance would be GREATLY appreciated on how to make a working mainline u-boot. @loverpi Can you help support the board??
