You need to have a properly flashed SD card or eMMC and a proper 30W USB PD power supply. The firmware for the SPI NOR will be released one of these days and it will allow the board to boot without SD card or eMMC.

For SPI NOR, instructions on how to properly make a bootable SPI image would be nice. I'm able to compile the SPI files just fine, but I'm probably missing a portion to make it bootable (initramfs?) - Just help for that portion would be great, I could compile an unofficial SPI NOR bootable image and publish it here.
@warwilf - I posted a bootable armbian image based on latest code. It's the most complete and up to date image right now. Try writing that on an SD card with Rufus, put it in the board and power it on with a 30W+ PD power supply. You should be able to work the board that way, as loverpi mentionned. All the image is missing is finished GPU support and the SPI boot after this.
